Man Utd in ‘pole position’ to sign £50m star from European giants after Chelsea pull plug on transfer
According to reports, Man Utd are ‘favourites’ to sign Inter Milan star Andre Onana as Chelsea have ‘ended their interest’ in the goalkeeper.
United and Chelsea are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer and they have largely been linked with the same targets.
The Red Devils want a shot-stopper who could compete (or even replace) David De Gea, who is out of contract at the end of this month.
Chelsea meanwhile are looking for an upgrade on Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga, who have both flattered to deceive in recent months.
Onana enjoyed a brilliant six-year spell at Ajax before he joined Inter Milan last summer. He also impressed for the Serie A outfit during his debut season as they reached the final of the Champions League.
Inter Milan are in a difficult financial position so they could be forced to sell a couple of their prized assets before next season.
Man Utd and Chelsea have been in the running for Onana, but according to The Evening Standard, the Blues have now ‘ended their interest’ in the Cameroon international.
This is said to leave United in ‘pole position’ to sign the 27-year-old. They are ‘favourites’ to sign him and he is ‘expected to cost around £50million’.
Onana previously worked with Ten Hag at Ajax so they could be set to reunite at Old Trafford. On De Gea, the report adds.
‘United remain in contract talks with David de Gea, who will be a free agent next month if no agreement is reached and is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.
‘De Gea’s future will be resolved before any move for a new goalkeeper is launched.’

Football Insider are reporting that ‘De Gea is delaying a decision over a new Man United contract amid concerns over transfer speculation surrounding the goalkeeper berth’. They explain.
‘It is believed Man United are keen to draft in a new top-quality goalkeeper to rival De Gea, 32, this summer. The Spaniard is looking for assurances over his role in Erik ten Hag’s side for the 2023-24 season.
‘They have been linked with the likes of Andre Onana, David Raya and Jordan Pickford as they look to kickstart their summer business.
‘However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that any potential moves have been put on hold while they wait for De Gea to decide on his future.’
