‘It’s true’ – Romano confirms three Man Utd targets but one player will ‘have to leave’ first
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Man Utd interest in Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat but a deal will hinge on Fred leaving the club.
The Red Devils secured the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea earlier this month and have all but secured a deal for Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Man Utd will now turn their attention to signing a striker with Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund top of their list before concentrating on bringing in another midfielder.
Amrabat, who had an outstanding World Cup for Morocco in the winter, is one midfielder who has been heavily linked to Old Trafford and Romano has revealed that there is truth in the rumours.
Romano wrote in his Caught Offside column: “Staying on midfielders, I’m getting a lot of questions about Sofyan Amrabat. For sure there are many clubs interested in him in Spain and in England, for instance West Ham asked a few weeks ago to be kept informed on his situation, though the player has completely different priorities.
“He’d like to play in La Liga but at the moment there are no offers from there, so keep an eye on the Premier League – it’s true that he’s one of the players being considered by Manchester United, though their priorities now are on a new striker, and then a new midfielder will depend on outgoings.

“Fred is one player who would have to leave, and he has interest from Saudi clubs, Galatasaray, and other clubs in the Premier League. Donny van de Beek also has good chances to leave this summer, so once these names leave they will decide on a defensive midfielder like Amrabat.
“Erik ten Hag knows that Amrabat is on the market and it could be one to watch but it’s not a priority, and also there is an awareness that Fiorentina are difficult to negotiate with, so he won’t come cheap. He’s one of a number of names on United’s list in that position.
“One other player who was looked at earlier this summer was Xavi Simons, who is now returning to PSG after they triggered their buy-back clause with PSV. It was just a contact between Man United and Xavi Simons side to understand what was happening between PSV, PSG and more.
“Man United appreciate Simons and wanted to be informed on his situation, but nothing is happening because they already have many players in his position and he will probably join RB Leipzig on loan as his next move.
“United have also been linked in some reports with Leon Goretzka, but honestly I’m not aware of anything concrete as of now for Goretzka. Bayern can’t lose too many players in that position, so at the moment it is not something concrete.”
