According to reports, West Ham United are considering submitting an improved bid for Man Utd and England star Harry Maguire.

Maguire slipped down the pecking order last season after he struggled under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick during the 2021/22 campaign.

New head coach Erik ten Hag preferred to use Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and even Luke Shaw at centre-back over Maguire, who is being heavily linked with a move elsewhere ahead of next season.

The England international will have to leave to get regular game time ahead of next year’s European Championships.

The former Man Utd captain has been linked with Aston Villa and Tottenham but West Ham are currently most interested in the defender.

The Hammers have already failed with two bids for Maguire. They submitted a loan proposal before they offered £20m to Man Utd for the centre-back’s services.

Maguire was valued at £50m at the start of this summer but Man Utd’s asking price for the defender has since reportedly dropped down to £35m.

Football Insider have revealed a so-called ‘major update’, which makes it sound more dramatic than it actually is.

West Ham are ‘considering’ a new ‘bid’ for Maguire but they are ‘aware that a deal could be difficult to do’ due to the player’s big wages and ‘reluctance to leave Old Trafford’.

But they are keen to strike an agreement. Their ‘interest is genuine’ and David Moyes is a ‘big fan’ of the Man Utd player.

Maguire was criticised by Man Utd newbie Andre Onana during their 3-2 loss to Dortmund on Sunday after a loose pass from the defender led to a shot on goal.

Former Premier League forward Gabby Agbonlahor has since hit out at Onana for picking on Maguire, who is an “easy target” at the moment.

“First of all Harry Maguire did nothing wrong,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT. “He gave the ball to a midfielder, who gave it away, and I feel like he is an easy target.”

“I don’t like that from Onana, I feel like he is an easy target. Are you doing that to [Lisandro] Martinez? I don’t think you’re, or even [Marcus] Rashord like that?’

Agbonlahor added: “Maguire is an easy target, so I did not like the look of that.

“I would understand if it was a big mistake, and cost a goal, or it was Harry Maguire’s fault, fair enough, but I want to see that same energy from every player.

“I understand he [Onana] is trying to create high standards, but when you watch games with him, he has given the ball away a lot and made mistakes.

“Imagine Harry Maguire doing that to him. I feel like you need to respect your teammates.”
