Manchester United will refuse Newcastle’s attempts to sign Harry Maguire on loan but would be open to selling the centre-back to the Magpies this summer.

The 30-year-old has only started in eight league games under Ten Hag and the club is open to selling him this summer.

Despite his lack of game time reports have suggested that Maguire is willing to stick around next season.

According to talkSPORT, the defender is ‘reluctant’ to leave as he wants to ‘fight for his place’ at the club.

It’s further reported that United are becoming ‘concerned’ that their plans to sign Kim Min-jae from Napoli could be ‘scuppered’ by Maguire’s decision to stay.

Tottenham have been linked with Maguire but are yet to make a play, while Aston Villa, like Newcastle, are said to be interested in taking the England international on loan.

The Villans want reinforcements this summer as Unai Emery prepares his squad for their European campaign.

And The Sun claim Emery’s side ‘have a better chance of a loan deal being accepted by United’ than Newcastle.

It’s claimed the Red Devils are hesitant to loan Maguire to the Magpies as they would be ‘helping a direct rival while receiving no financial benefit’, but would be open to a permanent sale.

Maguire is contracted with Man United until 2025, with the option of a further year in his contract.

While he might be reluctant to give this contract up, he surely needs to be playing regular football to keep his place in the England set-up.

Gareth Southgate continues to pick Maguire, but even he has admitted that he needs to be playing more regularly.

“Inevitably it’s not a situation that can continue for ever,” Southgate said back in May.

“It’s like Kalvin Phillips. They are important players for us and with Kalvin we haven’t got many players who can play as that single pivot.

“Of course the longer that situation goes on the more concerning it is and we’ve got, in Marc Guéhi, Lewis Dunk, Tyrone Mings, players who are playing well without the same experiences of club European football or international football. But we’ve got to keep searching for competition in that area of the pitch.”
