Man Utd takeover: Pundit ‘feels sorry’ as Glazers ‘doing what they want’ in prolonging process
Gabby Agbonlahor says he “feels sorry” for Manchester United fans, as the Glazer family “are doing what they want” by prolonging the sale process, because “no one can force them to sell”.
It was November last year when it was announced the Glazer family would listen to bids from prospective buyers of Manchester United. After multiple bids were lodged, the two leading contenders emerged as Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The pair are still in the running, having both made multiple bids around the desired sale price. However, reports now suggest the sale process will continue into the season, despite the fact ‘final bids’ have been sent on more than one occasion.
Former Premier League footballer Agbonlahor feels the fact the process has been prolonged is unfair on fans of the club.
“I do feel sorry for the Man United fans,” he told Football Insider.
“They’re looking at other clubs who are in such great condition. My club, Aston Villa, are in a great position with owners, fans and players all at one with each other.”
Indeed, Agbonlahor feels the process should have been completed, and new owners should have been able to start making necessary improvements.
“I think everyone is sick and tired of hearing about the Glazers. We don’t want to hear that anymore – but you can see the frustrations,” Agbonlahor added.
“Old Trafford, for example, should be the best stadium in the country. The training ground should have been revamped – and that could have been happening this summer.”
He also feels United could have made tracks to levelling the playing field with Manchester City, who have finished above them in the Premier League every season since 2012/13 – the last time the Red Devils won the league.
“They’re tired of being underdogs to Man City, and the right owners would bring them back level with City,” he added.
“I can understand the frustration. The Glazers are doing what they want. No one can force them to sell.”
The process might well continue for a while, and fans will hope that when it is finally over, the new owners are able to get things that they want to improve upon done properly.
If and when that is able to happen remains to be seen, though.
