Toby Alderweireld expects to hit the ground running when he returns to Tottenham to prepare for the new season.

The Belgium defender has played a pivotal part in his country’s run to the World Cup semi-finals but his attention is now on the Premier League season.

Alderweireld has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who have been reported to have been negotiating a deal worth around £55million with Spurs.

But the 29-year-old says he will be going back to work with Spurs this weekend having been working on his fitness during his break.

“This weekend I am just going back to London because then the preparation starts at my club,” he told HLN Sport.

“I have been working on my condition for a while because I want to be as fit as I can be.”
