Premier League side Man Utd are set to seal the signing of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo at a ‘bargain price’, according to reports.
The former France under-20 international has been in good form for Ligue 1 side Nice over the last couple of seasons after finally finding a permanent home.
Barcelona signed the centre-back from French club Toulouse in January 2019 but he only made five senior appearances for the Catalan giants.
Todibo was sent out on unsuccessful loans to Benfica and Schalke before eventually joining Nice on a temporary deal in February 2021.
Nice took up their option to buy the French Guiana-born centre-back as they paid €8.5m plus another €7m in variables to take him to the French Riviera on a permanent deal.
And, after making 86 appearances for Nice during his permanent spell, it looks like he could be on the move again after catching the eye of Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag.
Spanish newspaper Nacional claims that Todibo has given the ‘ok’ to Man Utd over a potential move with the Red Devils set to land him for a ‘bargain price’.
Barcelona have also been offered the option to ‘recover’ Todibo following his unsuccessful first spell in La Liga – but it is apparently Man Utd who will now seal a €30m deal.
Man Utd have already signed Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Jonny Evans – who is in line to earn a one-year deal – while Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund will be unveiled over the coming weekend.
And now Nacional insist that it is ‘a matter of moments’ before Todibo completes a move to Man Utd after Ten Hag ‘requested the arrival of the footballer’ in an effort ‘to replace Harry Maguire’.
Maguire looks likely to leave Old Trafford this summer after losing the captaincy to Bruno Fernandes and falling down the pecking order at centre-back, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez now Ten Hag’s preferred partnership in central defence.
West Ham have had a £20m bid for Maguire rejected by Man Utd and former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara can’t understand why the England international is still at the club.
O’Hara told Grosvenor Sport: “[Maguire] needs to leave Manchester United. I don’t know why he’s still there – I would have handed in a transfer request and left the football club. He’s not wanted there, he’s had the captaincy taken off him and he’s not respected as a player by anyone – it’s obvious.
“He needs to just get out and play football where he can actually enjoy himself and get his confidence back. He’s not a bad player, but I don’t think he has the respect he deserves at Manchester United, because he’s not good enough and because he’s not at that level.
“He should go somewhere where he’s going to be loved – because it isn’t Manchester United.”
When asked which side would suit Maguire, O’Hara added: “I’d have him at Tottenham, I think he’d be decent for them! He’s better than Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez, let’s be real.
“He would fit a team who are still trying to be a better side, but still aren’t the level of Manchester United. Man United are the biggest club in the world, and you’ve got a player there who’s just not good enough. He just needs to go.”
