Ex-Liverpool player Danny Murphy has told Man Utd to ignore Sir Alex Ferguson as they should not appoint Carlo Ancelotti.

Ralf Rangnick has been Manchester United’s interim boss since December. He has won eight of his 17 games in charge so far.

The German is due to take up a consultancy role at the club this summer. The likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag have been linked with the permanent vacancy.

Ten talking points at the two-thirds stage of the PL

Earlier this week, it was reported that Ferguson was advising Man Utd to appoint Ancelotti on a short-term deal.

The Italian is a respected boss and he has won the Champions League three times. He is currently Real Madrid’s manager and they are six points clear at the top of La Liga.

Murphy believes Man Utd need to go for a more “stable” option than Ancelotti:

“I have the utmost respect for him [Carlo Ancelotti], the jobs he has done over the years, and he is supposed to be a terrific fella,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“He has not stayed in any job longer than two seasons, other than AC Milan, the club he loved, that was many years ago where he spent eight in total.

“But, he was at Chelsea for a couple of seasons, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid for a couple, Bayern Munich for a year, at Everton for eight months, maybe less, and now he’s back at Madrid.

“I think United have to look at something more stable more long term. I know that is the opposite of how Chelsea get success, but we are talking about Manchester United, a different model.

“Also I think Ancelotti’s managerial style is one where he has gone into many clubs that have already got success, superstars, players top of their game, and just keeps that going – Everton was obviously different.

“I remember speaking to a couple of people who worked under him at Chelsea. They spoke very highly of him.

“Basically, they said that his management style was let the players look after themselves on the training pitch. He was not intense, very easy going, laid back, Sven–Goran Eriksson type from when he was England manager. He trusted the players.

“That is not what United need.”
