Man Utd could have to pay as much as £62m this summer if they want to land Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund, according to reports.

The 20-year-old, who joined Atalanta in the summer for around €17m from Sturm Graz, is having a brilliant first season in Serie A with the Denmark international catching the eye with seven goals and two assists in 25 league appearances.

He followed this up recently with five goals in two man-of-the-match performances for Denmark in a 3-1 win over Finland and a 3-2 loss to Kazakhstan.

Hojlund was already on the radar of a number of top clubs around Europe but those two performances in the latest international break have put him under the spotlight even more.

A previous report in Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet claimed that they are expecting bids of around £23-31m in the summer transfer window with Man Utd having ‘concrete interest’ in the forward.

The Red Devils are still looking for a long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo – who left the club in November after a controversial interview with Piers Morgan – with January loan signing Wout Weghorst unlikely to be part of Erik Ten Hag’s plans going forward.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos are among the names recently linked with Old Trafford but there could be room for two more forwards if the price is right.

But Italian publication Corriere della Sera claim that Atalanta now want as much as €65m-£70m (£57.5m-£62m) which is as much as double the amount quoted in Ekstra Bladet last month.

Despite rumours that Chelsea have a bid worth €68m on the table, the report claims that as of today there have been no ‘concrete offers’ put on the table for Hojlund.

Atalanta’s plan is ‘not to deprive themselves of him in the summer’ but there is always ‘the possibility of a super offer’ which cannot be refused.

Man Utd would have one advantage if they decided to make a bid for Hojlund with the Dane insisting that he is a “huge Manchester United fan”.

“Now that you ask, I will not hide the fact that I am a huge Manchester United fan,” Hojlund said back in January.

“So personally, it would be one of the biggest things for me, but of course that doesn’t mean that I would turn down other big clubs if the offers come at some point.”
