Man Utd to sign Chelsea man

Man Utd have been told that a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would make “perfect sense” if David De Gea leaves in the summer.

De Gea is out of contract in the summer. United have the option to extend his deal by a further year on the same terms.

It has been reported that they are unwilling to do this as they would instead prefer him to pen an extension on lower terms.

The Spaniard was once considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world but he has made mistakes on a more consistent basis in recent years. He also had a shocker against Everton in the FA Cup and has been labelled ‘disastrous’.

Until De Gea signs an extension, United are bound to be linked with several potential replacements.

Now ex-player Louis Saha has claimed that his former club should sign Mendy from Chelsea.

“De Gea is still right at the top level, but of course making mistakes as he did against Everton is never good,” Saha told Football Odds and Betting.

“Over the years, De Gea has done tremendous performances to save the team and he deserves the time and credit for that.

“If De Gea doesn’t sign a new contract then a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would make perfect sense.

“He has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world the last few years and I’m not sure what happened.”

The Senegal international hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge but his form has declined in recent months and he currently finds himself behind Kepa Arrizabalaga in the pecking order at Chelsea.

Man Utd are busy at the moment as they are also looking to sign a short-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Burnley forward Wout Weghorst is the likely candidate with him set to join the Red Devils on loan.

Saha went onto suggest that Weghorst is “maybe not the right option”.

“Hearing rumours for Wout Weghorst is a bit of a surprise, but I won’t get excited this transfer window because it’s not like there’s a £100m striker who we’re gambling on signing,” Saha added.

“It’s good that he’s already used to the Premier League, it is very dangerous when players join from abroad – especially for big money – but someone like Joao Felix could bring something completely different straight away.

“Filling in the gap with someone like Weghorst is maybe not the right option.

“I also heard about Vincent Aboubakar – it’s not what I expect to happen and I’d rather see [Erik] ten Hag try and continue to get the best out of [Marcus] Rashford and [Anthony] Martial.”
