Man Utd make transfer call as Maguire ‘upsets’ teammates

Manchester United are planning on buying a ‘world class’ centre-back this summer with Harry Maguire ‘upsetting’ a number of his teammates this season.

The Englishman became the world’s most expensive defender in 2019 as United signed him from Leicester for £80m.

Maguire was made captain at the start of 2020 and has been an ever-present over the past couple of years. He has already played 135 times for the Red Devils.

United are enduring a tough season and currently sit fourth in the table, but with Arsenal primed to overtake them with their games in hand.

A report on Thursday claimed that Maguire’s teammates have ‘privately questioned’ Ralf Rangnick’s ‘continued selection’ of the centre-back.

The players are said to have ‘aired their grievances’ amongst themselves and believe Maguire’s displays have not ‘met the club’s standards’.

And now the Daily Mail (via Mirror) claim the club have made a decision to target a ‘world class’ centre-back to partner Raphael Varane in Maguire’s stead.

The report adds that Maguire has ‘upset’ a number of teammates this season by openly blaming them for individual errors, which they feel is unfair given his own erratic form.

Paul Parker believes his former side should consider selling the England international should they receive a signficant bid this summer, but believes another United centre-back should be given the chance to form a partnership with Varane.

“If United, in my opinion, were to get somewhere near to their money back on Harry Maguire, I think they’ll have to think about it,” Parker said.

“I think [Victor] Lindelof and Varane, you know, they could build something on there maybe, in a mode of what they’re looking for and where the club wants to be.

“You’re talking about players who are definitely more agile, a little bit quicker, better defenders in one against one situations and I think you have to look at it that way.

“I don’t know if it’s going to happen. Me, personally, for United to go forward, that’s the starting area.”
