Man Utd urged to sign defender ‘very similar to Ferdinand’

Teddy Sheringham thinks Harry Maguire would make a brilliant signing for Manchester United this summer as he reminds him of Rio Ferdinand.

Leicester City centre-back Maguire has been linked with a move to United for quite some time, as the Red Devils have been looking to bolster their defensive options.

However, a move didn’t come into fruition in the summer, with the former Sheffield United and Hull City man staying put at the King Power Stadium.

He continues to be linked with United but the most recent report in the Daily Mail claimed that City could sign Maguire in a deal that ‘might have to eclipse the £75m price Liverpool paid for Virgil Van Dijk’.

And now Sheringham has backed the idea of Maguire moving to Old Trafford as he would bring a “calming influence” to the side.

“Central defence is a big area where they need to find a Vincent Kompany or Tony Adams-type player,” Sheringham told The Mirror.

“I think Harry Maguire is the one for me. He’s got great leadership qualities, and has a real calming influence.

“He’s very similar to Rio Ferdinand, in that he’s cool on the ball and defends very well. That would be a fine start from my point of view.

“Top players like Harry are going to have the choice of some big, big clubs around Europe this summer.”
