Report issues Varane warning despite Man Utd interest ‘exploding’

Man Utd have stepped up their pursuit in Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane after sealing a deal for Jadon Sancho, according to reports in Spain.
A £73m deal for Sancho was confirmed by both the Red Devils and Borussia Dortmund on Thursday with thoughts immediately turning to their next target.
ESPN claimed soon after that France international Varane is next on the list with Man Utd ‘close to finalising a deal’ for the centre-back.
Will Jadon Sancho be another Nicolas Pepe?
France’s exit from Euro 2020 is said to have further stirred Man Utd chief John Murtough into action, with the Red Devils reportedly confident of striking a deal of around £40m.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on finding a suitable partner for Harry Maguire in the heart of United’s defence and though they have also shown an interest in Villarreal’s Pau Torres, Varane was always said to be their top target.
And now Spanish publication AS (via Sport Witness) claim that Varane is United’s ‘great goal’ for the rest of the summer as they continue to strengthen their squad.
It is understood that Man Utd are on the ‘final offensive’ for Varane after making their ‘first contact’ with the centre-back months ago.
Despite claims that their pursuit has suddenly ‘exploded’ after the Sancho news, AS warns that negotiations between the clubs ‘promises to be long and there may be surprises’.
It’s claimed that Paul Pogba could be one name that pops up during talks with Real Madrid’s long-term interest in the midfielder well known.
Man Utd are looking to avoid paying ‘more than €45m’ with Varane’s contract due to expire next summer.
The Spanish newspaper adds: ‘Varane himself really anticipated this move by Manchester United when he did not want to answer the renewal offer that Madrid raised him months ago’.
In a further warning over the deal, AS reckons that ‘all possibilities remain open for him’ as Varane doesn’t rule out extending his deal at the Bernabeu.
Meanwhile, former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand would be shocked if Varane doesn’t sign a new contract at Real Madrid.
“Varane is just doing things, massaging the papers, the media papers and the headlines to get a bigger deal at Real Madrid,” Ferdinand his FIVE YouTube channel.
“If Varane doesn’t sign a new deal at Real Madrid, I’ll be surprised.
“Real Madrid are not letting Ramos and Varane go in the same window, 100 per cent. He’s not going anywhere, man’s gonna get a new deal.
“It’s happened in the past, it’s not new, players like [Toni] Kroos and [Bastian] Schweinsteiger have done it. At Bayern as well, they’ve all done it.”
