Manchester United youngster Alvaro Fernandez is being linked with two clubs as Erik ten Hag must make a decision on the defender’s future.

The Spanish full-back had an excellent loan spell with Preston North End in the Championship last season.

Man Utd had plenty of success with loaning their youngsters out last season as Amad Diallo similarly showed his class while on loan with Sunderland.

While Preston did ask about taking Fernandez back on loan for the season, it appears as if his future may lie elsewhere.

According to Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports News, Burnley want to sign the 20-year-old defender. Having failed to re-sign Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen, Vincent Kompany’s side are in the market for a left-back.

The Spanish defender would be an excellent pick-up for a side like Burnley. While his defensive skills can still be improved upon, Fernandez is a natural when going forward.

Along with Burnley, Spanish side Real Betis are also interested in the 20-year-old according to Estadio Deportivo.

Fernandez spent his early years in Spain with the likes of Deportivo de La Coruna and Real Madrid, before Man Utd snapped him up in 2020.

He is under contract at Old Trafford until 2024, with the option of a further year in his deal. At this stage, it is not clear if Man Utd would be open to loaning him out or selling him on a permit basis.

Man Utd have let go of several youngsters so far this summer as the likes of Ethan Laird and Charlie Savage have already departed.

Fernandez gave an interview earlier this year where he stated his desire to play for Man Utd under Ten Hag.

“Hopefully, that is my dream now [to play regularly for United]. For the next season I have to come back in pre-season and we’re going to see,” Fernandez told the Preston club website.

“Erik ten Hag has to choose if they want me there or if they don’t want me. If they let me go on loan again, I don’t know yet.

“I don’t know what’s going to be my future. Hopefully I can know where is going to be my future, but I don’t know yet.”
