Manchester United will take up the option to extend the contracts of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Ashley Young until the end of next season, according to a report.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Manchester man James Ducker writes that all four players, who are out of contract next summer, are subject to having their deals extended should United wish.
Discussions over a new contract for Ander Herrera have been dragging on for months, but there is not thought to be any danger of him agreeing a deal with a foreign club in January. Instead, Herrera is happy to stay at Old Trafford.
The new deal for Ashley Young may be surprising given his age and high salary, but Young has impressed Mourinho with his work rate this season and has broken back into the first-team picture.
Juan Mata is a more interesting case, given that he is again struggling for minutes in a Mourinho-managed team. That’s despite Henrikh Mkhitaryan being in poor form. Given that Mourinho also wants to sign Ivan Perisic, Mata is surely unlikely to become a regular again.
Importantly, the extensions do not mean that those players will stay. It could merely be a strategy from United to ensure a higher transfer fee if they are sold.
