Mohamed Salah is “a wonderful player” who deserves to be voted Africa’s best, according to Diego Maradona.

Salah is one of the leading candidates for the 2017 African Player of the Year award, alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, teammate Sadio Mane and incoming Liverpool signing Naby Keita.

The forward has scored 12 goals and assisted a further four in 17 games for the Reds this season, having joined from Roma for £34.3million.

Maradona, who Salah actually cost more than – has endorsed the 25-year-old.

“I would like to support Salah who has greatly succeeded with Roma and Liverpool,” Maradona told Sada El-Balad.

“He’s a wonderful player who surely deserves the award.”
