McClaren: One Liverpool player would improve Man Utd treble winners

Former England boss Steve McClaren claims just one of the current Liverpool side would get into Manchester United’s 1999 team.

The Reds are on course to win the Premier League title with a record points tally after winning 24 of their 25 fixtures so far, and are well-placed to retain the Champions League.

If Liverpool win their next two games they will equal the points tally set by United’s legendary treble-winning team, and are on course to seal well over 100 points.

But Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Steve McClaren believes only one current Liverpool player would get into United’s 1999 team –  Virgil van Dijk.

“Virgil van Dijk next to Jaap Stam, that would be invincible,” he told Sky Sports. “Nobody would get past them.

“But for me, seriously, only Van Dijk would get into that team. When you look at that Manchester United team, that is leadership throughout the whole team, and leadership was the key.

“Liverpool are developing that now.”
