Man Utd star Scott McTominay has insisted that new signing Donny van de Beek will get his chance to impress for them soon.
The Dutchman was one of United’s marquee signings during the summer. He signed from Ajax in August in a deal worth around £40m.
The midfielder has been impressing both domestically and in Europe in recent years. He has been linked with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, but his big move proved to be to Man Utd.
But with United spoiled for choice in central midfield, first-team opportunities have been hard to come by for van de Beek so far. Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba both appear to be ahead of him in the pecking order currently.
Van de Beek has made eight appearances this season, but only three of them have been starts. He is also yet to make the starting XI in the Premier League.
The 23-year-old did start midweek for United against RB Leipzig in the Champions League. He was subbed off after 68 minutes in place of Fernandes.
The Red Devils were 1-0 up when van de Beek was taken off. But they eventually ran out 5-0 winners thanks mainly to a hat-trick from Marcus Rashford.
McTominay told United Review, as cited by The Independent, that van de Beek’s lack of game time is nothing to worry about:
“Donny van de Beek is a great lad and a brilliant football player.
“I’m sure, the way he is working in training and how hard he’s working, his time will definitely come to get more minutes on the pitch.
“I spoke to him a little bit and he’s a top kid. The way he applies himself every day. He is never late – always on time – and always trains to his absolute maximum.
“We have got a really, really good player and really good person there.”
