Paul Merson has claimed that Ozan Kabak’s agent should be “knighted” for getting his player a move to Liverpool.

Kabak came through the ranks with Galatasaray before he made the move to German side VfB Stuttgart in January 2019. He made 15 Bundesliga appearances before his €15m move to Schalke ahead of the 2019/20 season.

The 20-year-old made 36 appearances for the German outfit since then. Schalke have really struggled so far this term as they have only won once in the league from their 19 outings.

Kabak has been linked with a move to Liverpool a lot over the past few months. He finally looks set to seal his move to Anfield.

The defender has completed his medical ahead of a loan switch to the Premier League champions.

Liverpool will pay £2.5m as a loan fee and they will have an obligation to buy Kabak this summer for around €3om. Kabak is now believed to be in negotiations with the club over his contract.

The Reds are also edging closer to signing Preston centre-back Ben Davies before the deadline. They will sign the 25-year-old for a fee in the region of £2m.

Speaking on Sky Sports, as cited by the Liverpool Echo, Merson said he was “shocked” that Liverpool are going for Kabak:

“The lad at Schalke [Kabak], he honestly cannot believe his luck.

“If you were his agent, you’d look to be knighted. He’s gone to the champions, they’ve won one game all season, they’re struggling at the bottom of the league.

“I honestly don’t know [why Liverpool are buying him]. I just don’t know, that shocked me, it really did.

“The lad at Preston [Ben Davies] is a decent player, a young player, but it’s a massive jump, you’re playing against the creme de la creme in the Premier League.”
