Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo looks for the ball

Paul Merson thinks Man Utd should sell Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea as they are no longer Premier League rivals, according to reports.

The Portugal international has made it clear to the Red Devils hierarchy that he wants to leave the club this summer as he chases Champions League football.

Recent reports have suggested that Man Utd are now ready to sell him after a U-turn on their initial hardline ‘not for sale’ stance.

Man Utd still aren’t keen on ripping up Ronaldo’s contract this summer and would still prefer to try and negotiate a fee with any interested club.

There has been a lack of concrete interest from clubs this summer but Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have reportedly made tentative enquiries.

And former Arsenal midfielder Merson reckons Ronaldo would be a “no-brainer” for Chelsea as they look for a striker this summer.

“Chelsea need a centre forward you’ve got two of the best wing-backs in world football, maybe even three now with Cucurella coming in,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“They play so far up the pitch. It’s not like when you’re playing for Manchester United where you’re playing from the halfway line.

“You play at Stamford Bridge and right from kick off, the amount of time the Chelsea wing backs get the ball down the side and you whip that ball in for Ronaldo he hasn’t got to run anywhere he hasn’t got to run from halfway and beat three players.

“Put the ball in the box and you’re talking about one of the best finishers in the world you don’t get 800 goals if you can’t finish.

“He won’t have to do a lot of running and I just think it ticks the box for me and it’s a no-brainer for a year.”

Merson reckons Man Utd should sell Ronaldo to Chelsea as they are no longer rivals for the top four, while he has even warned them about Newcastle United.

The Arsenal legend added: “Why is it their rival? They’re not top four rivals, they’re a million miles off they’re not going to get in the top four.

“They’ve got to worry about making sure they don’t sell to Newcastle. They’ve got to start worrying about the club full stop I’m not being horrible. They’ve got to start walking again. Don’t start sprinting and worrying about the top four.

“There’s ways of losing football matches and you can’t be losing 4-0 to Brentford and that’s no disrespect.”

Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, who is a close friend of Ronaldo’s, told El Chiringuito (via Sport) that Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has made direct contact with the Man Utd striker this summer.

Aguirre said: “It was Simeone who called Cristiano and not the other way around. Let no one sell anything else because it is not true.”
