Mertesacker (and Lacazette) score in Arsenal win

Arsenal’s record signing Alexandre Lacazette scored on his first appearance for the Gunners as they saw off Sydney FC in their first pre-season game of the new campaign.

The new arrival from Lyon started on the bench as manager Arsene Wenger opted for a mixture of youth and experience, with the FA Cup winners sealing a straightforward 2-0 victory.

Captain Per Mertesacker opened the scoring in just the fourth minute as he volleyed the visitors in front.

Arsenal dominated much of the first half but Danny Welbeck saw a contentious penalty saved before Wenger changed all of his outfield players on 68 minutes.

Lacazette was one of those introduced and the France forward needed just 15 minutes to seal his first Arsenal appearance with a goal, slotting home Alex Iwobi’s low cross to wrap up the win.

Fellow new recruit Sead Kolasinac started the game along with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and Petr Cech as Wenger stuck with the 3-4-2-1 formation he adopted towards the end of last season.
