Mundo Deportivo claim that the 32-year-old was informed of his victory, with the forward pipping Liverpool’s Champions League winner Virgil van Dijk to the prize.
The ceremony will be held in Paris next Monday, with Messi on the shortlist along with Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Van Dijk was named as UEFA’s men’s player of the year at ceremony in August, but Messi pipped him to the title of FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award a month later.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Van Dijk should take the award as he was the best player last season.
“If you give the Ballon d’Or to the best player of his generation, you give it always to Lionel Messi, that’s how it is,” Klopp told Reuters.
“If you give it to the best player of last season then it was Virgil van Dijk.
“I don’t know exactly how it will work but that’s how I see it.
“If it’s for the best player, the best player at all, and of all, then it’s Lionel, (but if it is for) best player of last season, (then it’s) Virgil. We will see.”
Messi picked up the 10th La Liga title of his career last season, but missed out on the Champions League when Barca lost to Van Dijk’s Liverpool in the semi-finals.
