John Obi Mikel can return from the fringes at Chelsea just as Yaya Toure did with Manchester City, according to Salomon Kalou.
Mikel has not made a single appearance for the club since the appointment of Antonio Conte as manager, with the midfielder not even named in a matchday squad.
Speaking to Goal, Kalou believes Mikel can take inspiration from Toure, who underwent similar treatment at City before returning to the first team and making an immediate goalscoring impact.
“He is my dear friend,” Kalou said of his former teammate. “He has to wait and be patient, that is football.
“Patience is the key for him right now.
“What I learned in this game is that nothing is guaranteed in football, you can find a move fast, or find yourself back in the team. Like Yaya, he played after not playing for several months and came back and scored two goals.
“Everything can change from today or tomorrow. Just wait for your moment. I said to Yaya [when he was on the bench]: ‘At the end of the day, you have to wait and do your talking on the pitch.’ And that’s what he did!”
