The Millers could – and should – have had this game wrapped up by half-time as the Bulls goal led a charmed life. But all they had to show was an 11th-minute Adam Le Fondre goal after the Hereford defence was split wide open by Kevin Ellison’s slide-rule pass and Le Fondre coolly scored his 10th of the season.
Pablo Mills shaved the post with a 15th-minute shot, Nick Fenton smacked a volley against the crossbar, Adam Bartlett saved from Le Fondre with his legs and Le Fondre was inches wide with another effort.
But when Ian Sharps failed to deal with a long ball into the area the ball broke to Hereford’s Mark Marshall six yards out but he somehow screwed his shot over.
Marshall was replaced by Mathieu Manset after the break and the substitute’s 53rd-minute shot took a wicked deflection but was well saved by Andy Warrington.
Rotherham had lost their first-half sparkle and it was the visitors who looked the likeliest to score. They did just that with a minute to go when substitute Gavin McCallum lashed in a close-range shot in an 89th-minute goalmouth scramble.
