Egypt forward Mo Salah has requested a huge £500,000-a-week contract to remain at Liverpool, according to reports.

The 29-year-old is thought to be a target for Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

As such, Liverpool recently entered negotiations with the player and his agent over a new deal.

Is Steve Bruce now just Mike Ashley’s human shield?

The Mirror claim that Salah wants to be rewarded for his exceptional form in each of the last four campaigns.

He apparently wants to become one of the top earners in the Premier League, alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne.

Salah, who bagged 31 goals in all competitions last term, currently earns £200,000 a week. His existing deal expires in June 2023.

The report states that Liverpool are willing to hand him a large pay rise, although they will not break their wage structure to meet his demands.

His request is said to be the reason for talks failing to progress in the past few weeks.

Manager Jurgen Klopp recently hinted that Salah could be offered new terms.

“I am involved in pretty much everything in the club. Maybe some talks happen without me, that’s possible, but apart from that I know about all the things and that’s how it always is – we don’t really speak about these kinds of things.

“I know we changed that a little bit with Hendo (Jordan Henderson) but that doesn’t mean we will talk from now on and tell you about each little step we make in any negotiations.

“Mo is obviously in a really, really good moment football-wise, mood-wise.

“How he behaves from the first day he came back has been absolutely great.

“So we’re all adults, we’re all professionals. There are talks and there are more talks and when there is a final decision, we will tell you. Until then, it is only important how the parties work together in these things.

“With two years left you can imagine there are talks and that is it,” Klopp added. “He is hungry for goals – there is no doubt about that.”

Salah joined the Reds from Roma for £34million four years ago. He has since managed an impressive 127 goals in 206 matches for the club.
