Chelsea bidders want to appoint a technical director once they’ve taken over with Paul Mitchell interesting them, according to reports.

The Ricketts family withdrew their bid to buy the Blues last week, leaving three consortia battling it out for control of the Premier League club.

Todd Boehly, Stephen Pagliuca and Sir Martin Broughton head up the three remaining bids and are waiting to hear who the preferred bidder will be.

Reports have suggested that once the preferred bidder has been selected then a takeover will be wrapped up in May once the Premier League and government have approved.

And The Athletic insist that one issue the potential new owners are keen to address is the lack of permanent technical director after Chelsea decided not to replace Michael Emenalo, who left in October 2017.

It is claimed that ‘a name figuring prominently in preliminary conversations is Paul Mitchell’ who is currently the sporting director at French club Monaco.

Two of the three Chelsea bidders ‘are believed to be closely monitoring Mitchell’s situation and could contact the Englishman if they take control’.

The former Wigan Athletic and MK Dons player has two years left on his contract in Ligue 1 and there have been rumours recently that he could leave his post.

On the pitch, Chelsea have given themselves a chance of lifting silverware this season after they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Sunday to reach the FA Cup final next month.

The Blues will face Liverpool – who beat them on penalties in the Carabao Cup final – and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel thinks they will need a bit of luck to beat Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Tuchel said after the match: “It will be another hard fight, given the quality and run of form of Liverpool. It will be unbelievably difficult to beat them, but this is what a cup final is all about.

“It is about winning and we need to try to find a way to beat them. We need a bit of luck and everything at a top level.

“Of course it makes the season so much sweeter if you have at the end of the season a final you can win, but as we all know in a final, you need to compete against each other.

“We experienced last season and already this season that sometimes you give everything and it can be not enough, but we will try to find a way.”
