Jose Mourinho has cooled talk suggesting Manchester United are looking to recruit a left-back but praising Luke Shaw’s improvement.

United were linked with a move for Tottenham’s Danny Rose with Shaw seemingly having failed to convince Mourinho.

But the England defender was handed a first Premier League start of the season on Boxing Day against Burnley. Mourinho has since started Shaw in United’s last four matches.

Ashley Young returns from suspension for this weekend’s visit to Turf Moor, but Mourinho was keen to praise Shaw in his pre-match press conference.

“He has payed very well,” said Mourinho. “He was already improving and playing well when I started playing him after that long spell without minutes.

“I remember the first time, Champions League, he was coming step by step and now with a good run of matches and continuity. Playing like he did against Everton two days after a previous match… good, solid. Physically much better, mentally much stronger, tactically understanding the game much better and what we need in different phases and circumstances.

“I’m really happy. You like the transfer market and I can say in this moment, I don’t see many left-backs better than Luke Shaw.”
