Mourinho explains why he missed United’s opening goal

Jose Mourinho missed Manchester United’s opening goal against Leicester – because he was talking to Jesse Lingard.

United beat Leicester 2-0 on Saturday to maintain their perfect start to the season, with substitutes Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini both scoring.

The hosts were the better team throughout at Old Trafford, but found it difficult to breach a tough Leicester defence until Rashford converted from a second-half corner.

Mourinho says that he missed the goal because he was talking with Lingard, and that he knew United had scored because “the crowd were very quiet” throughout.

“We scored from a corner that I didn’t even see because I was speaking with Lingard,” the United boss said.

“I saw the ball jumping in the net and other guys jumping. The crowd were very quiet so it would be easy to know that was a goal because it was the first time I really understand that the stadium was full.”
