Jose Mourinho says that he has a “secret” concerning his career that he intends to keep until he is “really, really, really old”.
In a wide-ranging interview with French television channel telefoot, Mourinho admitted that he once turned down the chance to manage Barcelona.
The Manchester United boss has managed in Spain just once, at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, but almost moved to the country two years prior.
Read 16 Conclusions from United’s draw with Liverpool on Saturday, then allow Mourinho to explain why he left Real four years ago.
“It was my decision, my daughter wanted to stay at the University of London and I thought it was the right moment to leave,” he said.
“It was an important moment for my family.
“There are also professional reasons behind my decision. I reach the best results when I am happy and I was not happy in Madrid anymore.
“I wasn’t happy in my third year there.”
The Portuguese almost took over from Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona in 2008, but turned down the opportunity. Pep Guardiola was appointed instead.
“Maybe I will reveal the truth one day,” he said of rejecting Barca. “There is something about my career that I want to keep secret.
“I will tell the truth when I will be really, really, really old.”
