Mourinho insists Ajax shouldn’t be in the Europa League

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho does not agree with a team playing in two European tournaments in a season.

Ajax, who are United’s Europa League final opponents, lost 5-2 on aggregate to FC Rostov in the Champions League first playoff round before entering the Europa League.

And Mourinho insists teams should not be allowed to play in both competitions in the same campaign.

“They are a Champions League team, I disagree that a team should play two European tournaments in a season,” Mourinho told assembled journalists.

“Europa League is for teams who start the competition at the beginning of the season, like we did.”

Mourinho thinks Ajax have good “quality” and isn’t surprised that they will join United in the final on Wednesday.

“I wasn’t surprised, I really don’t know why you’re surprised they reached the final,” Mourinho added.

“The age of players isn’t important, the quality is important. I think Ajax make the right investments at the right times.

“Ajax has a very good scouting and education system. These talented players don’t arrive at Ajax by accident.”
