Jose Mourinho has identified Eric Bailly as Manchester United’s best player in the defeat to Manchester City.

United slipped to their first defeat under Mourinho’s management on Saturday, with bitter rivals City winning 2-1. We have 16 Conclusions for you from the game.

Kevin De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho scored for the visitors, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s first-half strike proved to be a mere consolation.

De Bruyne’s opener came directly from a Bailly mistake, with the defender losing an aerial duel to Iheanacho, before the Belgian fired past David de Gea.

But Mourinho was full of praise for the £30m summer signing after the game.

“We can speak about Eric Bailly, who was playing for Villareal who never played in a derby of this dimension, but was our best player, was the player of the month, and produced a fantastic performance,” said the Portuguese. “He coped with many situations.

“So you never know the way players are going to react, especially when you don’t know them so well. And after only a couple of months it is too early to know them really well.”
