Mourinho names the ‘most important match’ of his reign

Jose Mourinho believes the Europa League final was “internationally our most important match in the last years”.

Mourinho is now in his second season in charge at United, having won two trophies and a Community Shield in his first campaign.

The Portuguese has guided United to second place in the Premier League, the last-16 of the Champions League and the FA Cup quarter-finals.

But he says that the “most important match” he has overseen was May’s Europa League final victory over Ajax, which completed the club’s set of European trophies, and assured Champions League qualification.

“I think the Europa League final was internationally our most important match in the last years because we won the competition and that victory brought us to Manchester United’s natural habitat, which is the Champions League,” he said.

“I think Manchester United has to be a team of the Champions League, so that victory last season was very important for us because we finished outside the top four in the Premier League and, by winning the Europa League, we won a title and at the same time, we went back to the Champions League.”
