Danny Murphy has named two Chelsea players who he believes make it so they “have to be taken seriously” as Premier League title contenders.

After finishing the 2020/21 term by winning the Champions League, the Blues started the new season at home on Saturday against Crystal Palace.

They got off to a flyer as goals from Marcos Alonso, Christian Pulisic and Trevoh Chalobah helped them to a 3-0 victory.

Liverpool tactic obscures a machine whirring in background

Chelsea were without N’Golo Kante against Patrick Vieira’s side. Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic started in his place in central midfield.

Murphy has priased the duo in an interview that has been cited by The Metro. He argued that the difference between Chelsea and Leicester City is the Londoner’s quality in midfield:

“They have built some squad at Stamford Bridge and are brimming with confidence. They ended last season by winning the Champions League and took that form into the game against Crystal Palace.

“For Thomas Tuchel to make so many changes and for everyone to be at it right away was impressive.

“The difference between Chelsea and Leicester, for example, is if Leicester lose Wilfred Ndidi or Youri Tielemans there might be a drop off in their midfield.

“If Kante sits out a game, like he did against Palace, Chelsea call on two top internationals — Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic. That’s why Chelsea have to be taken seriously.”

Elsewhere, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has heaped praise on Chalobah.

The young defender made his Premier League debut on Saturday against Palace. His long-range strike in the second half was his first senior goal for the club:

Tuchel said: “Fantastic. He gets all the praise and it’s well deserved. Two excellent matches. He played against Arsenal and Tottenham in friendlies, then 120 minutes on Wednesday, then 90 today and scores. It’s fantastic these things happen in sports. A perfect day for him.

“We will never stop doing so [playing youngsters]. Chalobah plays alongside Reece James and Mason Mount. This is how it has to be. This is what we love. This is what everyone loves about football – a mix of famous players from abroad and quality players from the academy.”
