Mystery PL club thwarted after Man Utd reach ‘agreement in principle’ with Marcus Rashford
Marcus Rashford is set to commit his future to Manchester United after reportedly reaching an ‘agreement in principle’ on a five-year contract at Old Trafford.
The England international has been negotiating with the Red Devils for several months, with his current deal due to expire next summer.
Erik ten Hag is understandably desperate to keep hold of Rashford, who scored a stunning 30 goals across all competitions for Man Utd last term.
The 25-year-old was the driving force behind a great opening campaign for Ten Hag and his team, as the Red Devils secured a third-place finish and won the League Cup.
Rashford’s reported new contract comes amid interest from other top European clubs. For instance, Paris Saint-Germain are known to have a concrete interest in signing him.
Man Utd have now put an end to that speculation, though, after agreeing a new deal with the forward.
That is according to journalist David Ornstein. He claims that Rashford has turned down ‘lucrative’ contract offers from abroad – as well as from a mystery team in the Premier League – but is set to reject them to remain at Old Trafford.
Writing for the Athletic, Ornstein said: “Rashford received more lucrative proposals from teams in England and Europe but turned them down to stay at United, where he has always dreamed of winning major honours.”
Rashford signed for Man Utd as a seven-year-old and made his senior debut for the club back in 2016.
He has made 359 appearances overall for the Red Devils, scoring 123 times and winning the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup twice in the process.
Ten Hag has already brought in Mason Mount from Chelsea this summer and is on the verge of sealing a deal for Inter Milan keeper Andre Onana.
Keeping Rashford was arguably the most important thing for Man Utd, though, and it’s believed that he has been given a big pay rise.
As previously reported by Football365, some outlets have claimed Rashford has been offered a salary of £400,000 per week at Old Trafford.
The Englishman is already one of the top earners at Man Utd on a £200,000-per-week wage but would become the highest-paid player if that claim is true.
With Rashford’s new contract now seemingly agreed upon, Ten Hag can switch his attention to bringing in new players.
As mentioned, Man Utd are very close to finalising the signing of Onana and now the manager wants to bring in a new striker to play alongside Rashford.
Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund is considered to be Man Utd’s primary target. An official offer is yet to be made, but Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that talks are ‘on’ for the 20-year-old.
