Neil Warnock is of the belief that three Middlesbrough defenders are “better than Manchester United’s defence”.
The Red Devils have endured a troublesome season in 2021/22 so far. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the club earlier this term and he has been replaced by Ralf Rangnick.
Man Utd currently sit seventh in the Premier League. They have a game in hand over some of their rivals.
Rangnick’s side have the joint-worst defensive record (along with West Ham) out of the top seven teams in the Premier League.
Man Utd beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup thrid round on Monday and they will face Middlesbrough in the next stage. The fourth round will take place between February 4 and 7.
Warnock has told talkSPORT that his former club have a better defence than Man Utd:
“They’ve got great individuals but not a team.
“They’ve got my old team Middlesbrough in the next round of the FA Cup and I wouldn’t swap any of their defenders for the back three at Middlesbrough – Dael Fry, Anfernee Dijksteele and Paddy McNair.
“I think they’re better than Man United‘s defence.
“The team at the moment, it looks like they all look after themselves. Harry Maguire’s the captain but I think he needs help at times. I think they’ve got a major problem at the moment.
“For me it’s more of an arm round in an office job. It’s not his physical aspect, it’s just like everything in life is against him at the minute.
“If you’re a manager you should have your finger on the pulse. You can tell he’s not happy, he’s not doing this and that, you’ve got to get him to one side and find out.”
Elsewhere, Charlie Austin has suggested that Man Utd have “no chance” of winning the Premier League “for ten years”:
“You can go back as far as you want to: they are a shadow of what they were before.
“When I was growing up, Man United was the biggest team. Everybody would say, ‘Man United, they win trophies’ – United have got no chance of winning the Premier League in years and years!
“They have got no chance, let’s be honest, of winning the Premier League for nearly ten years.”
