Manchester United legend Gary Neville has questioned Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag’s capabilities to take on the Old Trafford job.

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a new long-term manager following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ralf Rangnick is currently in charge on an interim basis and will step into a two-year consultancy role in the summer.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag are two names constantly linked with the managerial job at Old Trafford.

Pochettino made his name in the Premier League after guiding Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019.

Ten Hag took his side to the semi-finals that season, losing to the north Londoners, and has won two Eredivisie titles and two Dutch Cups during his time in Amsterdam.

However, Neville has questioned whether the United-linked pair ‘have it in them’ to make the Red Devils contenders for the Premier League title again.

Murtough on Man Utd manager search

“If you look at Pochettino and ten Hag who are the two that keep getting mentioned,” Neville told Sky Sports (via the Daily Mail).

“Pochettino we don’t even know if they can get from Paris Saint-Germain. Have they got the personality to come in to Manchester United?

“The scale of the club, the issues that exist there at this moment in time – are they able to have the personality and character and the strategic planning of how to manage up and down?

“To influence up, to take over the planning of the training ground, to redevelop the stadium, all the stuff you think a great manager would do.

“I’m not sure Pochettino and ten Hag have got that in them.”

Another name linked with the United job is current Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The Mirror claim that Southampton’s two draws against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City caught the eye of the United hierarchy, namely football director John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher.

While Pochettino and Ten Hag are still the ‘first choices’, should they fail to persuade the pair, Hasenhuttl is ‘a name they are prepared to consider’.
