Manchester United were not “at it from the start” against Newcastle, according to Jamaal Lascelles.
Lascelles impressed at the heart of the Newcastle defence as the Magpies earned a 1-0 victory on Sunday.
Man Utd had their chances but failed to take any of them as debutant Martin Dubravka enjoyed an excellent start to life in the Premier League.
Matt Ritchie scored the winner for Newcastle, who were also denied a clear penalty when Chris Smalling fouled Dwight Gayle in the first half.
Lascelles says Smalling and Phil Jones “didn’t know what to do” with the ball when they were in possession.
“First-half, they were making a lot of mistakes, giving the ball away,” he said. “I think it was down to our pressing, being aggressive and on the front foot. And obviously, they didn’t like it.
“I could see their centre-halves on the ball, and they didn’t know what to do with it. I don’t think they were at it from the start. A lot of their players were missing.
“I don’t think United turned up today. When you play against Arsenal and Manchester City, you can really see their quality. One mistake or a lack of concentration, and a goal will go in. Today, we just wanted it a lot more.”
