Newcastle United are looking to whittle down their list of targets and Man Utd midfielder Scott McTominay is reportedly one player they are interested in.

The Magpies are enjoying a brilliant season under Eddie Howe as they currently find themselves in the Champions League places.

They were in a relegation battle when he took over last term but he eventually guided them to a mid-table finish in the Premier League.

Newcastle have acted expertly in the transfer market over the past two windows as they have used their newfound wealth wisely.

Alexander Isak and Sven Botman were among their additions in the summer and they are ahead of schedule as they currently sit third in the table.

It would be a phenomenal achievement if they manage to remain in the top four by the end of the season. While they do have some brilliant players, their squad is not yet at the same level as their rivals near the top.

They are in the transfer market to try to remedy this, with The Telegraph reporting that ‘expressed an interest’ in McTominay.

The Scotsman has fallen down the pecking order this term and he is ‘worried’ about his lack of game time for the Red Devils.

McTominay is said to be ‘widely liked’ by Newcastle’s management team and they ‘will bid if they are offered any encouragement from Old Trafford to do so’. As for the player, he is ‘open’ to the transfer.

Signing a new centre-midfielder is the ‘main priority’ for Howe this month but ‘he is also looking at wingers and right-backs’.

The report adds that Newcastle are ‘looking at the possibility’ of signing Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Hakim Ziyech.

Due to Chelsea’s ongoing injury troubles, they ‘would be reluctant’ to let Gallagher or Loftus-Cheek leave, but Ziyech ‘would be allowed to leave’ despite his great performances for Morocco at the World Cup.

The report adds that Wolves star Ruben Neves has ‘also been discussed’ but their rivals ‘have no intention to sell’ and a potential deal for the Portugal international would be ‘beyond their budget’.

Bruno Guimaraes has been one of Newcastle’s star performers this term but he was forced off during their 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday. Howe stated post-match that the Brazilian was “worried about his ankle”.

“He was (in distress), and he was after the game,” Howe said.

“He’s worried about his ankle, it was a twist. He felt he could carry on until the end of the first half when he signalled to come off. Never a good sign from our perspective.

“We’ll get it scanned and see what the damage is. We hope it’s not long-term but at this moment in time, we don’t know.”

But The Athletic have confirmed that Guimaraes’ injury is not as bad as first feared.

He ‘is expected to be out of action for a week, or weeks, rather than months after a scan showed he did not suffer serious damage’.
