According to reports, Newcastle United are ‘leading’ Manchester United in the race to sign AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi.

The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the best defenders in Ligue 1 during his spell at Monaco over the past three seasons. He has played 129 times for the French outfit since 2020.

Disasi – who has been capped four times by France – has caught the attention of several clubs around Europe. Man Utd have been linked with him as a potential alternative to Kim Min-jae, who is set to leave Napoli and join Bayern Munich.

Ten Hag have reportedly ‘approved’ the signing of Disasi, but Newcastle United have joined the race to sign him ahead of their return to the Champions League.

It has been reported that the centre-back – who can also play at right-back – is valued at €50m this summer.

Florian Plettenberg is now reporting that Newcastle United are ‘pushing a lot’ for Disasi. ‘Concrete talks have taken place and are ongoing’ between the Magpies and Monaco.

It is noted that Man Utd are also ‘exploring a deal’ but they ‘have to sell players first’, with Harry Maguire understandably picked out as the individual they could do with binning off the most.

Following the Englishman’s decline, United are struggling to get rid of Maguire. At the start of the summer, he was valued at £50m but their asking price has already decreased to £35m.

Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham have all been linked with Maguire and it may prove that a loan move is the most realistic outcome.

But this still feels a long way off and Disasi could already be a Newcastle player by this point, as they are ‘in the lead’ for him ‘at this stage’.

Former Liverpool and England star John Barnes reckons Maguire “would be a great signing for Newcastle”.

“I think Maguire can have a better time at Newcastle. I think so. Because of course, you look at him when he plays for England and of course Harry always plays and Gareth Southgate loves him in the team,” Barnes told indiabetting.

“It just hasn’t worked for him at Man Utd and once it doesn’t work, it’s going to be difficult for the fans to back him. Once he’s got this perception, no matter how well you do for England or elsewhere, it will be difficult for him to do that at Man Utd.

“I think Maguire would be a great signing for Newcastle. He’s English, he’s a main player for the national side and he’d be a good signing for Newcastle if it comes off.”
