Newcastle in ‘pole position’ to sign Arsenal star as Howe identifies two intriguing transfer targets

Tierney-and-Odegaard-Arsenal

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has reportedly identified two left-back transfer targets as he looks to bolster that area this summer.

The Toon boss is expected to bring in several big names as he looks to prepare his squad for Champions League football.

In 2022/23, Newcastle utilised Dan Burn, who is generally a centre-back, in the left-back position. Now, despite Burn putting in some fantastic performances, Howe is keen to add a new, quality full-back to his team.

As previously reported by Football365, Arsenal star Kieran Tierney is believed to be one of his top targets.

The Scotsman has fallen down Mikel Arteta’s pecking order since the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko last summer.

Overall, he made just 27 appearances in the Premier League this term, the majority of which saw him come off the bench.

Tierney did, admittedly, have some injury problems. But, he would most likely be a second-choice option for Arsenal again next season.

Now, according to Football Insider, Arsenal are ‘braced’ to receive bids for Tierney this summer. The report adds that Newcastle remain in ‘pole position’ to sign the Scotsman. They are expected to make a bid towards the end of June.

It’s believed that Tierney is ‘keen’ on joining the Magpies this summer. So, the only thing left to negotiate is his transfer fee.

Previous reports suggest that Arsenal will demand a fee in the region of £30m for Tierney this summer.

However, interestingly, Howe also has another left-back on his transfer shortlist.

Indeed, as per Italian outlet CalcioMercato, Newcastle are also considering a move for Sassuolo left-back, Rogerio.

The 25-year-old ranks among the very best in Serie A for crossing, interceptions and tackling stats, which has seemingly caught Howe’s attention.

In 2022/23, he made 36 league appearances for Sassuolo. In the process, he contributed three assists.

Rogerio was also linked with a move to Newcastle back in January. So, it wouldn’t be a major surprise to see the Magpies reignite their interest this summer.

It’s believed Sassuolo would consider bids in the region of €20m (approx. £17.1m) for his services.

The Brazilian isn’t the only Serie A star Newcastle are linked with, either. Indeed, the North East club have reportedly seen a £50m opening bid rejected for Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella.

Now, they are expected to go back in with an improved offer for the Champions League finalist.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle match Arsenal’s £30m valuation of Tierney. Or, if they go for the cheaper option, in Rogerio.
