Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo has said getting a first win of the season is “the most important thing” for the Magpies.

Steve Bruce’s men face Leeds United on Friday night as both sides search for their first league win of 2021/22.

Leeds have enjoyed victory once this season, beating Crewe Alexandra 3-0 in the Carabao Cup second round.

In the same competition, Newcastle fell at the first hurdle after losing a penalty shoot-out to Burnley.

The North East outfit sit 19th in the league, one point ahead of Norwich City.

Looking ahead to the Leeds match, Manquillo has insisted getting that first win of the season is the priority for the team.

“The key thing here is to be totally focused on the present and getting that first win – and then we’ll see what happens next after that,” the Spaniard told NUFC TV.

“But no, right now, the most important thing currently, and indeed the most challenging right now, is trying to earn that first victory.”

Manquillo has backed the fans to get behind the team on Friday night as they prepare to host Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

“Every team of course has an advantage when they are playing in their own stadium,” he added.

“On this occasion it’s ourselves who will be at home, and we know that we have a fantastic set of fans who are going to be getting right behind us and giving us the support that will give us that bit extra to try and get the win.”

The Magpies will be without star striker Callum Wilson for the match against the Whites.

Wilson tweaked his quad muscle against Southampton a fortnight ago but carried on and scored before being substituted in the 69th minute.

He is likely to be out injured until after the October international break.

Last season Wilson scored 12 goals in 26 league matches after making the move from Bournemouth and already has two in three this term.

As well as the Leeds fixture, Wilson could miss important matches against Watford and Wolves.
