Newcastle are plotting a move for Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara, according to reports.

The 21-year-old has entered the final year of his contract, making a transfer this summer likely.

The French outfit will demand £15million for his services to offset debts caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Mirror, Magpies boss Steve Bruce is an admirer of Kamara and wants to take him to St James’ Park.

Newcastle officials are ready to match Marseille’s price tag as the player has huge sell-on potential.

His transfer value could double after a couple of years if he adapts to life in the Premier League and performs well.

Kamara is a versatile player, too. He mainly plays as a defensive midfielder but can also operate at centre-back if needed.

Bruce already has Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Jeff Hendrick at his disposal in midfield, in addition to the Longstaff brothers.

But he wants to improve his options in the centre of the pitch to push Newcastle further up the Premier League table.

Kamara is the latest player to be developed by Marseille before being targeted by an English side.

Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta, who lifted the Champions League trophy at the end of May, made 68 appearances for Marseille between 2010 and 2012.

Dimitri Payet was one of the club’s star performers from 2013 to 2015 before being signed by West Ham for £13.5million.

He continued his great form in London, scoring 15 goals in 60 games. He then returned to Marseille for double his original fee in 2017.

Newcastle have also attempted to sign Arsenal starlet Joe Willock in recent months.

The Englishman was in great form while on loan in the north east, bagging eight goals in 14 matches from midfield.

But Gunners manager Mikel Arteta has ruled out a £20m move for the 21-year-old.

The Spaniard said in May: “I am really happy that things have gone so well because of the potential that he has.

“I think it was great for him to go away and have a different experience, he has grabbed that opportunity in a really positive and remarkable way. He will come back to us, we will have a conversation with him and plan the next years for him.

“He’s got a contract and that’s going to be here. That’s for sure.”
