Rafael Benitez says that he needs to spend some money on a new striker as Aleksandar Mitrovic closes in on a permanent move to Fulham.
Mitrovic’s sale is likely to raise Newcastle another £22m. Benitez had been told that he would be able to spend any money the club made.
Newcastle have already sold Mikel Merino for £10m, Chancel Mbemba dor £6m and Matz Sels for £4m. Their only purchase for money so far is Fabian Schar for around £3m, although Yoshinori Muto could soon be confirmed on a £9.5m deal.
That would leave Benitez with around £30m, if Mike Ashley stays true to his word. Good luck with that.
“It’s something we were expecting and it’s now a case of looking to see if we can bring someone else to replace him,” Benitez said.
“We are working and trying to bring in new players to bring in new competition.
“It means we can bring in another striker and we can be stronger.
“We did this business with Muto because we needed to do something more.
“I don’t control the accounts but if you do the maths we have enough money.”
Central defender Florian Lejeune has also been ruled out for most of the season with an ACL injury.
