Next Tottenham manager: Levy ‘schedules talks’ with top candidate after Redknapp gives seal of approval
Tottenham Hotspur have ‘scheduled a new round of talks’ with their ‘leading managerial candidate’ Ange Postecoglou, according to reports.
The Australian coach has impressed after taking over at Celtic in 2021. Now, everything points towards him becoming the new Spurs boss.
Indeed, Daniel Levy is thought to be very keen to appoint Postecoglou as soon as possible, as he looks to prepare for next season.
It has been a disappointing season for Tottenham. They finished in eighth place in the Premier League table – missing out on Europe for the first time since the 2008/09 campaign.
In the process, they have gone through three different managers – Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellini and now, Ryan Mason.
Clearly, Levy needs to get his next appointment right, with Postecoglou close to getting the top job. Although, one other candidate is still in the running.
This is according to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano. On Twitter, he wrote: “Tottenham have scheduled new round of talks with Ange Postecoglou at the beginning if next week — he remains the leading candidate.”
“Nothing done/agreed yet as Spurs also discussed Luis Enrique again internally this week.”
Enrique has been in the frame for the Tottenham job for some time.
But, it’s no surprise to see Postecoglou still at the front of the pack for the role. In fact, recent reports have suggested he could be appointed ‘as early as next week.’
This season, he guided Celtic to a second-place finish, missing out on the SPL title by seven points. Although, his team have reached the Scottish Cup final, as they prepare to face Inverness on Saturday.
Interestingly, former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp declared in a recent interview that Postecoglou would be a great fit for Spurs.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: “I said to a few people I thought he would be a frontrunner.
“If I was looking for somebody, if I was the chairman of Tottenham he would be right at the top of my list so it doesn’t surprise me.
“I’m sure it’d be a big blow to the Celtic fans to lose him. But I don’t know, he’s leaving a great club in Celtic but maybe the Premier League, the contract, the wages and what goes with it might be hard for him to turn it down if he does get offered.
“I actually met Tim Cahill a few years back. I managed the Jordan national team for two games and we played Australia and Tim Cahill came up and had a chat with me before the game and said to me ‘our manager is excellent, he’s different class Harry, he’s brilliant.’
“That stuck with me. It was interesting, he’s played for a lot of top clubs, been a top player for so many years and played under loads of great managers and he’s telling me about a guy I’ve never heard of from Australia so I was quite shocked.
“But it stuck in my mind and I’ve followed his career and I think Tim was right, he is excellent.”
