There has been no update from FIFA on whether Joel Matip is eligible to play for Liverpool again, according to boss Jurgen Klopp.
Matip was left out of the Liverpool squad to face Manchester United on Sunday after the club failed to get clearance from FIFA, while he also missed their FA Cup clash with Plymouth on Wednesday.
Klopp had expected to hear back from FIFA on Friday regarding the matter but by his afternoon press conference he still wasn’t clear.
“No, we don’t have an update. FIFA mentioned to us this would be kind of D-Day,” Klopp said.
“It’s difficult because there is not a lot of training time. But I had to put me out of this case because I have to be concentrated on other things.”
Despite the problems regarding Matip, the Liverpool boss has no issues with the African Cup of Nations, hailing it as a “great tournament”.
“We cannot change it (Matip) or turn it in our direction. It’s another experience,” Klopp added.
“But do I have problems with AFCON? Absolutely not. It’s a great tournament.. in the middle of our season. That makes it not too cool but I don’t think about it.”
