Chelsea criticised by Agbonlahor

Two Chelsea players have been slammed by ex-Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor as they are not good enough for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

After lifting the Champions League in 2020/21, this season has been less of a success for Chelsea.

They were beaten on penalties by Liverpool in the finals of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

The Sun thrust Chelsea into ‘broken badge’ crisis after losing one first-choice player

The Blues exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals and they finished third in the Premier League. They ended up 19 points behind Man City.

With Todd Boehly’s takeover due to be completed, Chelsea will be busy in the transfer market this summer.

Agbonlahor does not feel that Hakim Ziyech or Christian Pulisic are good enough to get Chelsea back to winning the title:

“He will be looking at this season and he will be looking at it as a disappointing season, a failure for a club like Chelsea,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“Yes they lost on penalties in two domestic cups, but they still lost them, they didn’t have enough to win them over 120 minutes. Knocked out in the Champions League early for Chelsea recently, and to be so far off Man City and Liverpool, it’s not good enough.

“You are losing Rudiger, you are losing Christensen, Lukaku has not been on form.

“He knows he has got a lot of players that he needs to bring into that squad and a lot of players that he probably needs to let go, players that haven’t turned up for him like Pulisic, Ziyech, are they the players that are going to get Chelsea back to winning the Premier League? I don’t think so.”

Elsewhere, The Daily Mail are reporting that Chelsea’s priority will be to bring in new defenders this summer. Tuchel ‘will have £200m to spend’ and the ‘vast chunk’ of this will go on defenders.

Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde is named as Tuchel’s ‘first choice target’. He is rated at £59m.

The Londoners are ‘growing more confident’ that a deal for Kounde will be finalised. RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol, Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Leicester’s Wesley Fofana are players Chelsea ‘are also interested’ in.

It is noted that ‘close to £100m’ out of their £200m budget would have to be spent to get two of their defensive targets.
