Nottingham Forest progressing deal for familiar goalkeeper, while Prem no.1 move also on cards

Nottingham Forest are reportedly ‘locked in talks’ with Manchester United over a transfer for Dean Henderson, and are also working on a deal for Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Three goalkeepers stepped on the field in a Forest shirt last season: Henderson, Keylor Navas and Wayne Hennessey. The former played a portion of the season before getting injured, before Navas was signed as the no.1.

Hennessey played a fringe role, but was selected when neither of the others were around. There’s a chance that if Forest complete the signings they want to, they could be in a similar situation where two or more goalkeepers represent them in the league this term.

It’s been suggested for a while that the club wants to sign Henderson permanently, following his previous loan, and the Telegraph reports they are ‘locked in talks’ with Manchester United.

However, the report states Forest ‘want to sign two new goalkeepers this summer’, so there’s a good chance another joins alongside Henderson, if ‘an acceptable fee can be agreed’.

The second man in their sights is Wolves no.1 Sa. One of the reasons for interest in the Portuguese is that Henderson ‘may not be ready for the season’s start’.

And with back-up Hennessey also out for the start of the campaign, Forest want to ensure they’ve got a solid goalkeeper between the sticks.

It’s said the City Ground outfit have ‘held initial discussions’ with Wolves regarding Sa, who cost them around £6million two years ago.

However, that he’s still under contract for another three years and has missed just three league games in that time suggests he’ll probably command a larger fee than the one Wolves paid to land him.

A significant fee of £30million has been mooted for the signing of Henderson. If Forest are to part with that sum, they might be less willing to spend big on another man who’s only going to occupy the same position.

With that being said, they could have money to burn. The report states they’re working on the departures of Jonjo Shelvey, Remo Freuler, Emmanuel Dennis, Sam Surridge and Steve Cook.

Indeed, they may be able to afford both men with no issues if all of those men are sold.
