Ornstein claims Arsenal ‘best placed’ to land Serie A striker

Arsenal-linked Dusan Vlahovic celebrates

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein claims there is truth in the rumours that Arsenal are interested in signing Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Vlahovic has emerged as one of the most in-demand strikers in Europe amidst his terrific form for Fiorentina in Serie A.

The 21-year-old has scored 18 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions this term after an impressive 2020/21 campaign in which he netted 21 times in the league.

Tottenham and Juventus have also been linked with a move for the prolific Serbian but his future destination remains uncertain with the striker not ruling out renewing his contract at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

Mikel Arteta recently stripped Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the Arsenal captaincy and dropped him from the first team, while other strikers, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah, out of contract at the end of the season.

That means buying a new striker has become a matter of urgency for the Gunners with Vlahovic heavily linked with a transfer to the Emirates Stadium.

And reliable journalist Ornstein has claimed in The Athletic today that Arsenal ‘are trying to sign’ Vlahovic and are ‘pushing’ for the transfer.

The Gunners are believed to be ‘best placed of Vlahovic’s current suitors when it comes to both the fee and salary’ and ‘if the 21-year-old is to move in January then, as things stand, Arsenal are in the strongest position to sign him’.

Lucas Torreira’s current loan could be turned into a permanent move as part of any deal but it’s still ‘unclear’ whether Vlahovic wants to leave Fiorentina now or wait until the summer.

It is understood that Arsenal are ‘not Vlahovic’s preferred destination’ but that Juventus – who he ‘he favours a switch to’ – will not be able to do business for the striker until at least the summer.

Ornstein adds that Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin at their two other main options with the journalist adding that any deal done this month ‘will essentially be a summer transaction done early’.

The centre of midfield is ‘another area of the pitch that could well be bolstered this winter’ at Arsenal and ‘was on the agenda regardless of Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny going to the Africa Cup of Nations and Ainsley Maitland-Niles joining Roma on loan’.
