Ornstein reveals how the Arsenal squad reacted to the news of Jorginho’s arrival

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has revealed how the Arsenal squad reacted to the deadline day signing of Jorginho from London rivals Chelsea.
Jorginho completed a £12m move across London with the Italy international having a better chance of finishing the season with silverware at the Premier League leaders.
His arrival was met with doubts from some fans and pundits with claims he may not fit into the Gunners’ style of play.
But Ornstein insists that the news of Jorginho signing for Arsenal created “a really positive response” amongst the Gunners squad.
“They certainly think this is a canny signing,” Ornstein told The Athletic Football Podcast.
“There was an initial scepticism on the basis of his age which is a throwback to Arsenal signing others from Chelsea like Willian and David Luiz in a time where they were not so good.
“Arsenal liked Jorginho. Mikel Arteta was a part of the Man City hierarchy that tried to sign him from Napoli.
“Arsenal then tried to sign him a few years ago. We’ve seen him embracing Jorginho as he’s left the pitch in the past. We know he’s a high-level player.
“When the news started to filter through to the playing squad and staff it generated a really positive response because players and staff know quality players.
“The view was that he has a fantastic technical level and tactical level, and vast experience.”
After signing for Arsenal, Jorginho said: “I’m very excited for this new challenge, and I just can’t wait to be on the pitch to be honest. Everything has happened so fast.
“I was a bit surprised, but I took the opportunity of this amazing challenge.
“It’s an important shirt. It’s an amazing club, a big one, and I’m really excited and happy to be here.”
Both Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu revealed their delight at the signing on deadline day.
Edu told the club’s official website: “Jorginho is an established professional with a strong mentality who brings quality and experience into our squad.
“He is a player who fits our style of play, and he joins us at a very good moment where he can contribute in a key position to help maintain our momentum. We welcome Jorginho to Arsenal.”
Arteta added: “Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience. Jorginho has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here.
“We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club.”
