‘Outrage’ over Man Utd attempts to sign Zaragoza youngster
Real Zaragoza have released an official statement after reports Manchester United have signed one of their players.
AS (via Sport Witness) claim that Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal and Valencia have all been keen on signing Mateo Mejia, however it is United that have ‘convinced the young footballer’ to swap Spain for England.
There have been claims in the English press over the last week that the Red Devils will wrap up a €670k deal for the 16-year-old but AS reckon that United will actually only have to pay the player’s €150k training rights.
AS add that there has been ‘outrage’ over the potential transfer with the youngster understood to have said goodbye to his Zaragoza team-mates, but Zaragoza have been kept in the dark.
The speculation has forced the Spanish side to issue a statement to clarify their understanding of Mejia’s situation: “Given the information in the United Kingdom about the Real Zaragoza cadet footballer Mateo Mejía and the interest of Manchester United for his signing, Real Zaragoza wants to clarify the following:
“Mateo Mejía is a footballer who belongs to the discipline of Real Zaragoza in the Cadet category, linked to the Club with a federative card until June 30, 2020.
“Real Zaragoza has not reached any agreement for the transfer of this player to Manchester United.”
